Privacy

This is a draft for a person and a lawyer to review before anyone publishes it.

This page says what The Landlord Ratings collects and what we do with it. The first launch is Nashville, Tennessee. The page is written for people in the United States.

What we collect now

When someone writes a review, we collect:

• The review text.
• The landlord or the property the review is about.
• A display name the tenant chooses. We do not require a public real name. (decision: the public page shows the display name, not the legal name.)
• Whatever we need to check that the person lived there. (decision: that material stays private and is not part of the public review. We do not ask for a government ID in the review text. A lease page or a rent receipt is the kind of thing we mean.)
• A way to reach the tenant about that review. (decision: an email address, and we do not publish it.)

When someone uses the website, the server may keep a basic log, such as an IP address, a browser type, and the page opened. We use that to run the site and to deal with abuse. (decision: keep those logs for about 90 days, then delete them or reduce them to totals.)

Ads are not on the site yet.

If ads run later

Ads are not running. If The Landlord Ratings runs ads later, an ad network may use cookies and similar tools on those pages. We will update this page before that starts. No ad network is named here, because none is chosen.

Later ads would not change the next section. Tenant stories are not for sale.

Tenant stories are not sold

We do not sell tenant stories. We do not sell reviews. We do not sell personal information. We do not pass this information to data brokers, and we do not build files on tenants for other people to buy.

We show private check materials only to people who need them to run The Landlord Ratings, such as a company that hosts the site. (decision: hosting help only, and only as needed to operate. No host is named yet.)

What other people can see

A public page shows the display name, the review, and the landlord or property it is about. It does not show the tenant's email, legal name, or the materials sent for the tenancy check. (decision: unit numbers stay off the public page too, including the reviewer's own unit number.)

The landlord's name and the property address are public because that is what the page is about.

Correct or delete your own review

You can ask us to correct your review or to delete it.

Once a domain exists, email privacy@[site-domain]. Say which review you mean, and whether you want a change or a deletion. Use the email you posted with, if you still can.

If it is your review, we change the public text or we remove it from the public page. (decision: we do that within 10 business days.)

We may keep a private note that a review was posted and then removed. We use that note only so the one-review-per-tenancy rule still works, and so a dispute that is already open can be finished. The note is not a public copy. (decision: keep that private note.)

We delete the documents sent for the tenancy check within 90 days after the check, unless a dispute about that review is still open. (decision: 90 days.)

We do not change or delete someone else's review because a stranger asked. A landlord who disputes a review uses the review policy.

Children

The Landlord Ratings is not for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. (decision: cutoff at 13 for this section. The review policy still expects the person who posts to be 18.)
